Some slot canyons are so long and challenging it takes at least two days to get safely through them. Heaps Canyon is one of those. When you are down in the narrows of a two-day canyon, you feel like you are truly in the belly of a beast. This is the sort of feeling that overwhelmed me for most of my trip through Heaps. My passage through Heaps was one of the most challenging things I had ever done. I wanted my painting, heaps, to express that deep trapped feeling, but at the same time a sense of awe and wonder. We dropped into the particular area of the canyon depicted in the painting on the final day of our adventure. I remember distinctly the thoughts racing through my mind when we encountered this particular cathedral-like section. On the verge of utter exhaustion, I could see warm and brilliant light streaming in from the opening in the far distance.
